MANAGING MENOPAUSE NATURALLY WITH VITAMINS FOR WOMEN

Menopause is a normal biological process in a woman’s life, marking the natural transition between fertility and age-related non-fertility. Menopausal symptoms, in particular hot flushes and night sweats, can vary in their duration and severity and typically begin for women in their late 40’s to early 50’s, often leaving them hot and flustered.
Menopause, hot flushes and night sweats
Hot flushes and night sweats are caused by changing levels of hormones in the body, particularly declining oestrogen levels during the peri-menopause, menopause and the post-menopausal phases.
Peri-menopause is the period of time, usually 4-10 years, before the onset of menopause that tends to affect women in their early 40’s.
Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation for at least one year and usually occurs anywhere from around 45-55 years of age.
Post-menopause follows the menopausal phase where the ovaries stop producing oestrogen and while the adrenal glands and the conversion of androgens within fat cells produce small amounts of oestrogen.
As a woman approaches peri-menopause, declining oestrogen levels have a direct effect on the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that’s responsible for temperature control. Low levels of oestrogen trick the hypothalamus into believing the body is overheating. This triggers a cascade of biochemical processes to try and cool the body down by dilating blood vessels, resulting in hot flushes and night sweats.
Hot flushes and night sweats are the number one complaint for women experiencing menopause and are characterised by sudden, intense feelings of heat in the face, neck and arms
Excessive sweating
The frequency, duration and severity of hot flushes and night sweats varies greatly between women. Some women experience mild hot flushes and night sweats every now and then, while other women experience severe hot flushes and nights sweats all day and all night. Avoiding well-known triggers such as caffeine, alcohol, stress and excessive heat, can help to prevent hot flushes.
Top 5 herbs for hot flushes and night sweats
  1. Sage has been used for thousands of years and is traditionally used to relieve excessive sweating, night sweats and hot flushes associated with menopause.
  2. Pueraria (Kudzu), provides isoflavones (phytoestrogens), helpful in managingheat and dryness, improve libido throughout menopause and may help preserve bone health in postmenopausal women
  3. Chaste tree, also known as Vitex, helps support normal healthy hormone balance, helps relieve hot flushes and maintains healthy moods.
  4. Dong Quai may help relieve hot flushes and sleep disturbance in pre- and post-menopausal women.
These herbs have traditionally been used to help relieve a wide variety of menopausal symptoms, especially hot flushes, excessive perspiration, night sweats, sleeplessness, dryness, nervous tension, headaches, and joint and muscle pain.

HELP! MY KIDS KEEP COMING HOME SICK!

If you think your kids have been catching more colds since they’ve been at kindy or day care, you’re probably right.
This occurs because children’s immune systems are still developing.
When you encounter a cold virus as an adult, your immune system often recognises it as an enemy that it’s tackled before and fights it again before it can take hold.
Without those years of history to draw on, your child’s immune system recognises relatively few viruses, and is less capable of fending them off.
To exacerbate matters, colds are spread by being exposed to droplets from sneezes, coughs and runny noses, so viruses can spread at childcare centres, where many little ones haven’t yet learned the fine arts of washing hands properly, blowing noses or covering mouths when coughing.
Having a child with a cold can sometimes be as exhausting and frustrating as being sick yourself – so how can you boost your child’s resistance this winter?
Probiotics: In babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers, probiotics support the developing immune system, and may reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections. For optimal benefits, choose a product that’s been specially developed for kids.
Immune tonics: Herbal immune tonics such as Olive Leaf, Echinacea or Elderberry may be beneficial for children who are prone to recurrent colds, flu and sore throats, or who are slow to recover after they get sick.
Symptom relief: Some herbal blends for the relief of sinus congestion and other cold and flu symptoms are suitable for children as well as adults, and some are available in liquid tonics that are more easily administered than tablets.
However, bear in mind that the doses may need to be adjusted according to your child’s age and that some herbs are only suitable for young children under the care and supervision of a healthcare professional. Always check the label and follow the manufacturer’s dosage instructions, and if you have any concerns, talk to the team at Go Vita Tanunda.

THE UNEXPECTED BENEFITS OF GOING TO A NATUROPATH

The human body is an amazing thing. It is made up of about 200 kinds of cells, each with a job to perform. Cells form the tissue of your beating heart, the hormones that control your moods, and the chemicals that trigger thoughts in your brain. Trillions of cells are performing processes during every second of your life.
Whenever something causes these processes to become unbalanced, the body no longer performs to precision. You may feel specific symptoms or an overall feeling of not being well. A naturopath uses natural resources to help the body restore balance so that you can achieve optimal health. These “resources” often include herbs, but they also extend to meditation, counselling, and other alternative treatments.
The Role of the Naturopath
A natural health provider, or naturopath, has in-depth knowledge of the tools he uses. This knowledge includes an understanding of natural resources such as herbs, and their innate properties. A skilled naturopath has a strong desire to improve the way you feel in body, mind, and spirit. He understands the impact that your physical, mental, and emotional symptoms have on your life.
Prevention is also a large part of naturopathy. The naturopath can look at the morphology of your blood or your genetics to assess your risk for health conditions in the future. He takes a more personalised approach to determining the types of treatments and therapies you need to achieve your best health and general well-being in both the present and the future.
What a Naturopath Can Do for You
Naturopathy is often used to complement medical treatment for chronic conditions. It may also lead to relief for symptoms of common conditions like allergies, food intolerances, digestive disorders, skin disorders, and stress. These conditions are often difficult to pinpoint. While most are not life-threatening, the symptoms you live with each day can greatly affect every area of your health and keep you from enjoying activities that are important to you.
The Dangers of Self-Diagnosis
Some of the conditions that cause a loss of well-being require some trial and error to detect. Many conditions cause similar symptoms in spite of being quite different from one another. This is why self-diagnosis is never a good idea, especially if you are already on medications. Making a wrong assumption or mixing homemade remedies or OTC medications with prescription medications can result in serious complications. Instead, you should put your care into the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced naturopath who knows how to find the best solutions for you.
What to Look for in a Naturopath
There are many levels of naturopathic care providers with varying areas of study. Some of the most important features to look for in a naturopath are training, experience, and the areas of specialty that pertain to naturopathic treatment.
Peter Balogh N.D. more than meets the criteria as a safe and trusted naturopath. He is a certified homeopath with an advanced diploma of nutritional medicine, diploma of natural science which includes herbal medicine, and an advanced diploma of nutritional medicine.
Pete has been providing compassionate care for more than twenty years. He has built a successful practice and the variety of services he offers continues to grow.

How to stick to your healthy New Year resolutions!

If feeling your best, getting healthy, losing weight or getting fitter are part of your 2017 new year’s resolutions, then this article is for you!

So many of us start each year with the best of intentions … to drop a few kilos, deal with those niggling health issues, eat better, exercise more, rest more and the list goes on. But by about the end of January, many of us have already lost our way. So what goes wrong and how do you make 2017 the year those health goals really stick? Here’s our top 12 tips to make 2017 your healthiest year yet:

1. Set yourself up for success with a personalized plan

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail! It’s a simple, easy step that experts agree makes a big difference to achieving your goals. Go Vita health consultants are on-hand in store and available for consultations to help you set realistic goals and achieve them incrementally in a way that suits you. One of the top reasons we don’t achieve our healthy ambitions is we try to go it alone or adopt standard fad diets. We’re all different and we need to realistically take into account our personal health and lifestyle needs to succeed.

2. Adjust your attitude, believe you can achieve and take charge

Take a mental stock take of the reasons you’ve felt like you haven’t achieved your goals before. Get ruthless with excuses and make a note of lifestyle or environmental factors you need to accommodate in planning with your Go Vita health consultant, such as travelling for work, being a busy or sleep-deprived mum, or recovering from an illness.

3. Support your body with supplements

Improving your gut health and supplementing your nutrient intake can immediately lift your energy, support detoxification, reduce inflammation and aid weight loss. Ask a naturopath in-store about the right combination for your needs, but consider these super heroes to support your mission for greater health:
  • Introduce green supplements to improve alkalinity and keep your body in ‘fat burning’ mode. Look for Vital Greens, chlorophyll, spirulina, and chlorella. Try reds like acai, goji berries, blueberries as well as other combinations to reduce inflammation.
  •  Seek specialist digestive support to improve your gut health. Ask your in store health consultant about practitioner products with digestive enzymes, herbs and minerals. Add dulse flakes as a tasty salad topper. They’re an alkalising vitamin and mineral dense sea vegetable with no fat or calories.
  •  Introduce quinoa into salads. It has all nine essential amino acids and is full of vitamins, protein and fibre. Protein supplements can help you get into shape by helping you feel fuller, increasing energy, improving muscle tone, increasing metabolism and helping rapid recovery after exercise.
  •  For a low-carb plant protein, try the Balance Naturals range or to slim down look for Amazonia Raw Slim & Tone.

  • Garcina cambogia is a natural appetite suppressant, while raspberry key tones and African mango can assist with weight loss by helping the body handle and use glucose.
4. Take out the niggling issues first

If something has been bothering you for sometime, deal with it first to give yourself a sense of achievement or progress.

5. Sweat the small stuff

It’s easy to set lofty goals but we often overestimate what we can achieve in the short term, and underestimate the impact of small, meaningful changes that add up over a year. Instead of leaping into a 7-day gym schedule, try a brisk walk three times a week, introduce one new healthy food per week or do better-for-you swaps. Checkout pantry staples at Go Vita like quinoa, beans, lentils, brown rice, grains, dried fruit, nuts, cereals and healthy snacks.

6. Menu plan for mindful eating

Menu planning will make sure you always have healthy options ready. You’ll be more focused with your shop, save money and reduce waste. Pre-make bliss balls for healthy snacks spirulina, cacao, raw honey and try planning at least five healthy meals for weeknights, left overs for late dinners and throw in a homemade pizza for a Saturday night treat!

7.Become an avid label-reader

Checking food labels will help you make healthy choices by avoiding unnecessary saturated fat, added salt, added sugars, artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and unwanted kilojoules. To lose weight avoid foods with few nutrients and lots of kilojoules. Enjoy a treat, but consciously choose your favourites that are worth it. Be mindful of foods that look like a single serve, but contain several serves in one packet.

8.Get moving and make it fun!

Moving your body is essential to improving health, but instead of slogging it out at something you don’t enjoy, focus on making exercise fun. Try dancing, Zumba, playing fetch with your dog, walking in your lunch break, or group fitness with some friends in the park.

9. Take an inside out approach to overall wellness

If you’re cleaning up your diet or managing intolerances or allergies, but haven’t checked the ingredients on your cosmetics and moisturizers, you might be unknowingly slowing your progress. Remove toxic and hormone disrupting chemicals by avoiding the 4Ps–petrochemicals, phthalates, paraben and paraffin. Opt for safe options, like the beautiful Inika vegan, organic coloured make-up range available in store.

10. Unplug daily

It’s important to listen to your body and notice how the changes affect you. Slow down, ritualize time to check in with yourself before bed and try to get adequate rest, especially in the early stages of a detox when your body is working extra hard.

11. Know where you are on the journey

Research shows we all go through the same steps when we’re making new habits – contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. Knowing where you’re at can make easier to move forward and deal with setbacks as a normal part of making change.

12. Congratulate yourself!

When you reach your milestones it’s important to acknowledge how far you’ve come and give yourself a pat on the back.
